Starting solids is an essential milestone in a baby’s life.This introduces them to not only a whole new world of food with various textures and flavours but lays the foundation for good health and nutrition.

WHEN SHOULD I START WITH SOLID FOODS ?

Global as well as national guidelines clearly state that timely introduction of complementary foods (solid/semi-solid/soft foods) is after the child completes six months (celebrates his Half Birthday,ends 180 days of life),Till then exclusive breastfeeding is encouraged.It completely meets the requirements of the baby.It is done keeping in mind that the baby’s body may not be physically (sitting up and balancing neck on its own] and physiologically (gag reflex,tongue thrust) prepared for outside food.

It is crucial to keep in mind that breastfeeding should continue for 2 years of age.For formula-fed babies,the same rule doesn’t apply and it is advised that the child moves to solids and regular milk after completing 12months . Discuss with a qualified pediatric dietician/infant nutrition specialist on how you can achieve that.

Based on a child’s development milestones and readiness,caregivers can choose to start solids via BLW (Baby led Weaning) technique or Traditional spoon feeding technique or even a combination of both.Complementary food should be of age-appropriate texture.

Irrespective of what method you choose for starting complementary food,keep in mind the following:

1- Feed child always in sitting position

2- Feed at a time when the child is alert and not cranky  or sleepy

3- Be patient

4- Feed child food that is fresh and cooked from fresh ingredients at home

5- NO SALT till the child completes 12 months of age.

6- NO SUGAR/HONEY/JAGGERY atleast till two years.

7-Avoid DILUTED OR WATERY FOODS like juices or soups etc
